Tommy G. Thompson was elected to the Wisconsin Assembly straight out of law school, in 1966. He rose up the ranks of the Republican Party leadership, becoming Floor Leader in 1981 and earning the nickname, "Dr. No", from liberal critics.
In 1986, Thompson was elected governor and was re-elected three times. The nickname he earned in the Assembly fit well in his new job, as he used the state's "partial veto" more than 1,600 times on spending bills.
Thompson has received numerous awards during his long tenure of public service, including the Anti-Defamation League's Distinguished Public Service Award. In 1997, he received Governing Magazine's Public Official of the Year Award, and the Horatio Alger Award in 1998. Thompson has served as chairman of the National Governors Association, the Education Commission of the States and the Midwestern Governors Conference. He has also served in the Wisconsin National Guard and the Army Reserve.
Thompson was sworn in as the 19th Secretary of the U.S. Department of Energy on January 24, 2001.
